Every so often, one of my membership site coaching clients asks me to refer a good book on writing. Most of the time, I recommend either Strunk & White’s Elements of Style or William Zinsser’s On Writing Well.

Recently, I discovered a new book to recommend: Roy Peter Clark’s 50 Essential Strategies for Writers. The Poynter Institute, where Clark teaches, is a nationally-respected school for journalists, future journalists, and teachers of journalism. The Poynter Institute was a pioneer in many types of research, including eye-tracking studies of website visitors.

For a long time, Roy Peter Clark has been writing a series of very popular blog posts about effective writing on the Poynter site. These blog posts gained such a following that many bloggers offered consolidated access to Clark’s various posts, like the example here.

Now, of course, the posts are available in one convenient place! This is just one of many successful recent books that owe their origin to blogs. The blog-to-book idea is described in David Meerman Scott’s New Rules of Marketing and PR.
