Why aren’t online slide show formats used more frequently for displaying membership site content?
I’m surprised that membership site owners don’t take better advantage of online slide shows, like many sites use to control the progressive display of information. An example of what I’m talking about is slide show design and execution like that found on Fast Company’s Best Business Books of 2006. The online slide show technique is similar to many of the “Best Cars” and other “best” features that AOL.com frequently displays on its members home page.
Money Magazine’s Best Places To Live is another successful example of an online slide show–in this case, with larger graphics and more text.
The advantage of the slide show format offer membership site owners several important advantages:
- Speed. Visitors can proceed as slowly or as quickly as desired through the slide show by pressing the “next slide” link. They can review slides by pressing “Previous slide.” Slide shows can also be set up so the slides automatically change at consistent intervals.
- Efficiency. Since space is limited, slide text and graphics are limited, speeding production. The format encourages advance planning and conciseness.
- Security. If each slide is a graphic, viewers won’t be able to copy and paste the contents, preventing unauthorized sharing.
- Branding. The slide show format allows a great deal of design flexibility, i.e., colors, type, and layout can project a unique and appropriate image.
Membership site applications
The slide show format would be ideal for membership site introductory “site tours.” The slide show format would also be appropriate for “at a glance” topic introductions and overviews of the site’s various categories and content areas. Does anyone have any examples of slide shows on their site, or recommendations of slide show formats used in non-membership sites?
